Familia Imara

With funding from What Works II, Global Communities, in partnership with Kivulini Women’s Rights Organization and the Government of Tanzania, is implementing the Familia Imara project while National Institute for Medical Research and Emory University serves as the research consortium partners. The project works to reduce intimate partner violence (IPV) and violence against children (VAC) while strengthening parenting practices, child nutrition, and early childhood development. It also aims to influence changes in practice and policy related to IPV and VAC prevention.

Familia Imara operates in 15 district councils across the Mara, Geita, Mwanza, and Dodoma regions in Tanzania. The project targets households with children under 24 months and delivers a gender-transformative, nurturing care curriculum through trained community health workers. Through group sessions with mothers, fathers and couples, the project promotes positive family relationships, as well as improved child nutrition and healthy early childhood development.

Collaboration with government ministries will ensure this work aligns with national priorities and supports scalable, sustainable approaches to reducing violence and improving child wellbeing across Tanzania. Strong monitoring systems and research will also generate evidence to inform national policy and guideline reforms related to IPV, violence against women and children, and early childhood development – helping to strengthen the systems that prevent violence and support children to thrive.
