Intersections of Gender-based Violence and Common Mental Health Problems: Understanding the Evidence and Strengthening Integrated Action

Read our latest report and policy brief on the intersections of gender-based violence and mental health.

About this Report

This report from the What Works II Ending Violence Against Women and Children Helpdesk highlights the urgent need to address gender-based violence (GBV) and mental health together, rather than as separate issues. The report synthesises global evidence on the links between GBV and common mental health problems. It examines how experiencing GBV can affect mental health, and how common mental health problems can increase the risk of both experiencing and perpetrating violence. The report also explores promising approaches for addressing these interconnected issues, drawing on programme examples from low- and middle-income countries.

The findings are useful for both GBV practitioners and those working in the mental health sector. The report makes a strong case for greater investment in integrated approaches that address both GBV and mental health across prevention and response efforts, including through health, education and livelihoods programmes. Importantly, it highlights the need for survivor-led, locally grounded approaches that recognise lived experience and community knowledge as critical forms of expertise.
